Our response to CRUK:  Millennials top obesity chart before reaching middle age

27 February 2018

CRUK are predicting that seven in 10 millenials are set to be overweight or obese between the ages of 35-44.

Overweight and obesity are already a significant challenge for our aging population.  In Scotland over 70% of adults aged 45 -54 and 78% of adults aged 65-74 are currently overweight or obese.

This is a public health emergency and we need action right now.  Tomorrow (Tuesday 27th February 2018) the Scottish Parliament will debate “A Healthy Weight Strategy for Scotland”.  We hope it will demonstrate cross party support for action to change the food environment around us and make healthier choice easier for all.  The next crucial step will be implementation of the actions, to see positive change in the weight of our nation.

“Overweight and obesity is already a significant problem in our adult population so it is no surprise that millennials also face that challenge.  At the moment 7 in 10 adults aged 45-54 in Scotland are already overweight or obese.  That rises to 78% of those aged between 65-74.  These are shocking statistics that require urgent action” said Lorraine Tulloch of Obesity Action Scotland.
